Sundance, baby!

In the words of The Clash: Should I stay or should I go? The Sundance Film Festival's computer e-mailed me today to tell me when I can attempt to buy movie tickets. My half-hour slot isn't on the first day of online sales (it's either the second, third, or fourth day), and I hear the locals have snagged a lot of the tickets for the weekend of January 20–22. The premiere of the crossword documentary Wordplay is on Saturday the 21st. And there are parties for the Wordplay contingent on Friday and Saturday, as well as repeat showings Sunday night and Monday afternoon.

Sounds like a blast, right? But what if I fly to Utah, only to find out that while I made a brief appearance in the rough cut of the movie, I've been abandoned during the final editing process? Then...I see an interesting movie about people I know, not including me. Which isn't a terrible thing. And I've gotten a lovely offer of housing from Lisa, whom I'd love to meet. And who doesn't like to escape Chicago in January...to go to the snowy mountains of Utah? Same cold wind, but more scenic.

Advice? Does anyone think it's silly to go?

I would go in a heartbeat, b/c I love movies. In your position, it would be tough to go w/o expectations, so it would be handy to have other flicks you'd be intereted in seeing.

Silly? Are you kidding? You HAVE to go.
Maybe you'll even get a chance to hook up with someone on your List.

What would be worse, going to and seeing people you know in a movie, but not yourself, or missing a chance to go to SUNDANCE when you were possibly in one of the SUNDANCE movies??
(I just got the catalog the other day and I'm drooling over the Shinto-inspired bench.)

Cricket, I looked at the other movies in competition, and...eh, whatever. I'm sure they're excellent films, but there's nothing that I Have To See. But an extended blogger meet-up is always fun, and I do have a camera in my cell phone for random paparazzi action.

Doc, can you promise me George Clooney or Robert Downey, Jr.?

Mignon, you make an excellent point. Even if I merely play the part of an extra, there's no guarantee that this movie will pick up a distributor and play in a theater near me. I could wait for the DVD, but...the big screen? The chance to ask Robert Downey, Jr., "Did you see me in Wordplay?"
