I try the newfangled junk food so you don't have to

Diet Coke fans (hi, Kristin!), you might have seen the new Diet Coke formulation that's sweetened with Splenda instead of Nutrasweet. I bought a 12-ounce bottle for 50 cents to try it, and I assure you that it really doesn't taste like Diet Coke at all. Or regular Coke. It tastes sort of lemon-limey—but if you wanted your Diet Coke to taste like lemon or lime, you'd buy Diet Coke with Lemon or Diet Coke with Lime. I took one sip and put the cap back on to make sure none of it could get spilled anywhere near my tastebuds.

I think that Pepsi One might have different sweeteners, too, but I haven't tried it. For me, Pepsi products are associated with times of great privation—those occasions when Diet Coke is unavailable. Some of you know what I'm talking about.

De-lurking. I also tried it (probably bought from same grocery). Cute bottle, very weird soda. I'm no convert.

A friend of mine gushed over the new Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper. I tried it, it was fine, but not my favorite. I'll have to try that New Coke, though, I'm a sucker for Splenda. As long as they don't find it destroys brain cells or anything, I can't afford to lose too many more....

Indeed, I DID try it (all things D.C. related are worth trying at least once). Found it to be oddly sickly sweet; seemed like a less-fizzy version of the European "Coca-Cola Light" (D.C. with a special different name!) Was enthusiastic about trying a non-aspartame version ... until I tasting it (!) and reading some disturbing web entries on Splenda. God only knows; as vices go, it could be worse. (Kristin)

Yup, Jewel is much close to me than Dominick's! Obviously, fellow Chicagoan.

Came across your site through tangents of many other sites, and had to add...I had the exact same response to the one bottle of DCw/S I purchased. One drink, closed the cap tightly to assure no more of the nasty taste could escape, moved on.

Have to say, big fan of DCVCP, though, when I'm in a mood for something sweet.

Otherwise, Caff-free DC is my fave, in terms of flavor, seems to pack less of an aftertaste punch to me.
