Fruit blogging!

Two things.

Thing the first: I am eating an orange at this very moment. It sounds autocannibalistic, or racy, but it's actually quite tasty.

Thing the second: You know how sometimes you try to peel a banana, and the stem end just won't crack open the way it should? And you may pull out a knife in your impotent rage to cut the peel, or keep wrestling with the banana until the top end is all mushy? Guess what: You are allowed to peel the banana from the other end. It works. In fact, it is culturally imperialistic to insist on opening a banana only from the stem end, because people in other countries are quite willing to peel from the other end.

Like how I feel when I eat a good filet.

I only eat my insects chocolate covered.

Speaking of oranges, I have been haunted today. This morning, I went to slice one and did a number on my finger instead. An hour later, after I'd called a truce, I went back and ate that orange.

This evening, a bottle of GooBGone stuff tipped, spilling the oily, smelly crap all over the counter. Now my hands smell like that enemy-for-the-day orange, but my finger hurts and I can scrub my hands like I'd like.

Wow, I'm totally small-minded. It would never have occurred to me to peel a banana from the other end.

I'm so provincial.

but there's no stem on the other end ...?

It took me seven hours to understand Mignon's filet comment. But now...ha! That's funny!

And hello, Cricket, our fellow edibly monikered blogger! Sorry about your poor hand.

JT, I learned the banana trick (wow, that sounds even racier!) from my mother-in-law. I thought she was nuts and all wrong until I discovered that a judiciously wielded fingernail poked in the bottom (racier still!) will open even the most recalcitrant banana.

TAN, see above remark about judicious fingernail wielding. Not in the brown bottom (again with the racy!), but in the yellow peel immediately adjacent thereto.

Huh. I never knew that people were so attached to the stem end. I've always flipped around the recalcitrant ones. Yet I'm usually fairly rigid in matters such as these. I hope this doesn't give me banana anxiety.

How could we resist the orangey goodness?
